Top 10 Evaluation Criteria when Selecting a Prototyping Tool

Interactive prototyping for web and mobile apps is very important and has grown significantly over the past decade. There are many prototyping tools to choose from and this provides design agencies, designers, entrepreneurs and businesses with more options. To make life easier we would recommend the following evaluation criteria to select which prototyping tool works best for you as there is no one right tool that works for everyone.

Our proposed evaluation criteria:

  1. How easy is the tool to learn?

No design agency or an UI, UX designer wants to spend hours learning how to use a complicated platform. The good news is that there are tools in the market and they are pretty easy to get to grips with. The shorter learning cycle the better. In reality most designers don’t have the spare time to learn long-winded tools. In our opinion, a good start is ‘how easy and intuitive is the tool/platform to learn’.

  1. Does it come with support?

Support is good and if it’s quick, that’s a plus point. Problems and difficulties happen and having someone to contact to get support from is always a bonus. The quality and variety of support is also important. Are there help documents, guides, tutorials and videos on offer and available?

  1. How long does it take to create a prototype?

The actual time it takes to create your real-life prototype from uploading your image screens to prototype. There is no reason why creating a prototype should not be quick and simple with all the choices that are available in the market.

  1. Can you test on multiple devices

Does the tool/platform allow users to create a prototype for one device and test it out on all devices (ranging from smartphone to tablet and desktop)? This is a key requirement to determine the user experience across all devices. This allows users to quickly capture how their app looks and feels like across multiple devices before any coding has begun. In this way, it is quick and easy to change and improve designs before the app is built.

  1. How intuitive the tool is?

How easy and well does the tool/platform allow users to simulate end-users intended interaction? This includes transitions, scrolling, gestures, custom transitions, navigation between screens and overall display and appearance.

  1. How easy is it to share your prototypes with your team and clients?

The degree of features that is available on the tool/platform for sharing your prototypes to your team and clients. Are you limited to the number of people you can share your prototypes with? The rule of thumb in our opinion is to receive and take on board as much feedback as possible to each of your prototypes to refine and improve.

  1. How easy is it to collaborate on the prototype?

Does the platform/tool allow teams and collaborators to easily communicate on the design screens? Having the freedom to invite, as many or as little collaborators to each of your prototypes is a plus point. Does it support real-time design collaboration? The ability to have your team and clients discuss, iterate and collaborate in real-time on a prototype upon the design screen is definitely a key feature to look out for.

  1. Integration with other key tools?

Teams and businesses nowadays use so many other tools (e.g. Dropbox, Jira, SlackTrello) in their everyday activity. Having a built in integration with these third parties will help teams and businesses to automate a great deal of their work flow processes. This will help in saving time and ensuring that everyone is looking at the final versions.

  1. Can you keep track of all your design versions?

Feedback from your clients and team will surely bring many new design versions. Consequently, each feedback will provide a new design version and maintaining these versions can be very difficult to manage especially when you are working with large projects when dealing with more than 50+ design screens. Does the platform/tool provide a design repository to maintain all versions? A key question when selecting a tool/platform should be whether it has a built in version history control panel that is quick and easy to view your evolving design files?

  1. Pricing

This is last but by no means least, how much does the tool/platform cost to use? Some providers charge licence fees, yearly subscriptions, rolling month contracts and many more. All pricing plans are different and are all based on the number of users as well as the number of add-on features that they are offering. In our opinion, we feel the best two pricing plans are your rolling month contract. In this contract you can cancel at any time and you are not signed up for a long contract. As you may not like the tool/platform or feel that this particular one is not right for you. We also believe the pricing should increase with the number of users/projects. In this way, customers are only paying for what they are using.


At the end of the day, evidence beats opinion. Clients don’t want endless PowerPoint’s and back-and-forth emails and not to mention never-ending meetings and specification documents. Instead they want to see evidence they want to grasp and play with the prototype ‘like a real app’ on their computer or mobile.

Biggest Technology Event

Reflecting upon our busy three days at the Web Summit Dublin. This conference is Europe’s biggest technology event and one of the biggest in the world it attracts the world’s best and inspiring entrepreneurs. Tuesday morning we had lift off the ringing of the opening bell of the New York’s Nasdaq Stock Exchange. This year the Web Summit went from strength to strength with 22,000 attendees, 1,500 volunteers, 108 staff and contractors from all over the world. Each day, we started with a strong cup of coffee and then we were ready to be inspired and to talk to as many people as possible. This year, the conference was spread over two huge sites the RDS and Simmonscourt. For me the conference brought together great minds, start-ups, investors, entrepreneurs and provided ample networking opportunities all under one roof. The Summit was divided over 10 summits (these being the Builders, Enterprise, Machine, Marketing, Investors, Surf, Sport, Music, Fringe, and the Night).

Networking with Startups

Over the three days, we met many cool and inspiring start-ups from all over the world. All these start-ups were arranged in the following three categories Alpha, Beta and Start. This made it easy to understand the level of trading they were operating under. It was great to learn about all the different products and services that were available in the market, which would not have been as easy without the Web Summit. During the time, we spent walking around talking to the entrepreneurs exchanging business cards and scheduling many follow up meetings. For us, generally our goal was to network and build relationships with as many people as possible as every second counts. We had a lot of ground to cover over the three days.

Entrepreneurial Success Stories

Inspirational presentations from leading serial entrepreneurs like Peter Thiel and Mark Pincus in the tech industry was one of the highlights of this year’s Web Summit. These speakers provided food for thought and thought provoking questions to keep your entrepreneurial energy thriving. The Summit came to an end on Thursday evening with an exploding finale, on the main stage the final panel included Bono (founder of U2), Dana Brunetti, Eric Wahlforss, David Carr and Bill McGlashan. The main stage was full to capacity we were lucky to get a seat in the main arena. Not forgetting, the food summit that was delicious and it was a privilege to sample Ireland’s finest foods.


Making new friends, catching up with old and putting a face to a logo was great and also priceless because we don’t take time out of our busy lives to be able to do this. So the Web Summit provided us with a base where we could take stock and understand what the rest of the tech world was up to, plus have fun and enjoy ourselves.

On a final note, it was definitely the place to be, to promote your business, meet inspiring entrepreneurs, listen and learn from experts in the field and plunge into the tech world. Record crowds ascended on Dublin over the three days. The atmosphere was electric it was great to have so many entrepreneurial people all in one place. We met a lot of social savvy entrepreneurs and learnt a lot. For us the Web Summit is all about networking, collaborating and building lifelong relationships. The Web Summit is unquestionably where the tech world met last week. Thank you guys for organising such a great event. We hope to see you next year at the Dublin Web Summit 2015. Congratulations and well done to all who were involved.

We are thrilled to announce that SavahApp has released two new features for organising project files. These are really simple to use and will add value to your design collaboration. As our community grows we have loved listening to our users on how we can improve your experience.

Here you go, two of your suggestions ready and implemented and ready for your verdict:

‘Sections’ and ‘Folders’. Let’s start with sections:

If you have not yet noticed next time you login to SavahApp please check out our new feature called Sections. Users (existing and new) can create new sections with one click. Once you have created your section you can simply drag and drop your design screens into any section that you wish. This will lead to users having better array of your projects and ultimately this feature will allow you to do away with a cluttered home page. Thus, keeping everything simple and clutter-free.


We have tried to make your life simpler by redesigning our document tab, which now enables you to organise your documents into separate folders. You can simply create a new folder to manage your project design specifications, client briefs and so on. These folders will also help you to maintain different project releases and aid in your design handovers.

By organising your project files into folders this reduces your confusion and allows you to spend more time with your projects rather than organising your files.

We are very excited and pleased to have launched SavahApp a couple of weeks ago.

In 2011,  we started working on a collaboration platform for students, academics and alumni’. Our team was based all over the world from London, New York, Dubai and Lahore. It was here, we experience first hand a major design communication problem. We spent hours, days, weeks trying to finalise our initial design. I was sending countless emails back-and-forth with design feedback to our designers and at the same time, numerous back and forth emails, Skype calls and of course face to face meetings with my team but the whole process was confusing and not at all productive. We wasted so much time and money. We all felt there must be a quick and simple way to communicate design communication to your team that was robust and simple. In 2011 we looked at the market to see if there was any tools that we could use to simply receive and send feedback back and forth to our team. There were many prototyping tools available but they were missing design communication and it was the design communication facility that we needed.

We were so frustrated so decided to build our own in-house little tool to solve this specific problem that we were having. Our tool was very basic and allowed us to upload our design images and all of us then could add comments, suggestions onto the image. This made our life so much easier. This has worked really well for us and later on some of our friends have also started using it as well.

It was in 2013 that we took note of the advancement made in the industry as well as the growing need to improve the user-experience and that making the perfect design is the key for any product. It was at the same time that I was working with many design agencies and it was the same design communication problems that i was experiencing time after time. December 2013, we started to explore the market. We knew, experienced and witnessed the need for a design communication platform in the market that would bring the wow factor to designers, creative teams and design agencies to help them save time and deliver awesome products to their clients.

To date, we are doing well and have received excellent response from the companies that we have spoken with and in the near future we are releasing some more amazing features for our customer to help them solve their design communication problems and enable them to work more productive and smarter. As we believe this is just the beginning!
