Prototyping for Web and Mobile Apps, Why Bother Now?

Prototyping for Web and Mobile Apps, Why Bother Now?

This is the question that is repeated again and again, in the workplace. Designers, design agencies and businesses are concurrently designing web and mobile apps but the problem is, issues get highlighted when it is too late, products have been built and money, time has been wasted. Resulting in the customer receiving a product that does not meet their end requirements.

So why should we bother now!

By them, building a quick prototyping for web and mobile apps, they can quickly detect design flaws and test thoroughly the design functionality in order to pick up on any errors, bugs and misunderstanding early on, instead of when the product is finished or nearly completed.

An online prototype for both web and mobile design projects is a great way to compile user-feedback all in one place. Enabling users and clients to test-drive the web or mobile app. The client and design team would be able to think through the user’s journey from start-to-end as if the product was live. In this way, prototyping can reduce misunderstandings from both the design team and the client(s) perspective. Resultant in improved design quality and products closer to the customers end requirements. Like this, when a prototype is shown to the client(s) they will have clearer clarity and experience a feel for the functionality of the software and they can propose changes and modifications at this stage rather than at the end when the code has been written. As with prototyping, designers are bringing the client/user into the process much earlier.

Thus, resulting in better quality products being delivered to the end user. At this stage, all changes and feedback from all parties can be implemented into the design of the product. Since it is much ‪simpler to make ‪changes to the ‪design before ‪any coding begins and of course, it is far less expensive to rectify problems afore any code has been written and development started. By prototyping the client will save time and money and the design team will sign off the project on time resulting in higher user satisfaction. Prototyping is indispensable into-days’ fast moving digital design industry where nothing stands still to count back 3, 2, 1.

If you are looking for a great prototyping tool then you must look for these top 10 evaluation criteria and decided which one is great for your projects.

Top 10 Evaluation Criteria when Selecting a Prototyping Tool

Top 10 Evaluation Criteria when Selecting a Prototyping Tool

Interactive prototyping for web and mobile apps is very important and has grown significantly over the past decade. There are many prototyping tools to choose from and this provides design agencies, designers, entrepreneurs and businesses with more options. To make life easier we would recommend the following evaluation criteria to select which prototyping tool works best for you as there is no one right tool that works for everyone.

Our proposed evaluation criteria:

  1. How easy is the tool to learn?

No design agency or an UI, UX designer wants to spend hours learning how to use a complicated platform. The good news is that there are tools in the market and they are pretty easy to get to grips with. The shorter learning cycle the better. In reality most designers don’t have the spare time to learn long-winded tools. In our opinion, a good start is ‘how easy and intuitive is the tool/platform to learn’.

  1. Does it come with support?

Support is good and if it’s quick, that’s a plus point. Problems and difficulties happen and having someone to contact to get support from is always a bonus. The quality and variety of support is also important. Are there help documents, guides, tutorials and videos on offer and available?

  1. How long does it take to create a prototype?

The actual time it takes to create your real-life prototype from uploading your image screens to prototype. There is no reason why creating a prototype should not be quick and simple with all the choices that are available in the market.

  1. Can you test on multiple devices

Does the tool/platform allow users to create a prototype for one device and test it out on all devices (ranging from smartphone to tablet and desktop)? This is a key requirement to determine the user experience across all devices. This allows users to quickly capture how their app looks and feels like across multiple devices before any coding has begun. In this way, it is quick and easy to change and improve designs before the app is built.

  1. How intuitive the tool is?

How easy and well does the tool/platform allow users to simulate end-users intended interaction? This includes transitions, scrolling, gestures, custom transitions, navigation between screens and overall display and appearance.

  1. How easy is it to share your prototypes with your team and clients?

The degree of features that is available on the tool/platform for sharing your prototypes to your team and clients. Are you limited to the number of people you can share your prototypes with? The rule of thumb in our opinion is to receive and take on board as much feedback as possible to each of your prototypes to refine and improve.

  1. How easy is it to collaborate on the prototype?

Does the platform/tool allow teams and collaborators to easily communicate on the design screens? Having the freedom to invite, as many or as little collaborators to each of your prototypes is a plus point. Does it support real-time design collaboration? The ability to have your team and clients discuss, iterate and collaborate in real-time on a prototype upon the design screen is definitely a key feature to look out for.

  1. Integration with other key tools?

Teams and businesses nowadays use so many other tools (e.g. Dropbox, Jira, SlackTrello) in their everyday activity. Having a built in integration with these third parties will help teams and businesses to automate a great deal of their work flow processes. This will help in saving time and ensuring that everyone is looking at the final versions.

  1. Can you keep track of all your design versions?

Feedback from your clients and team will surely bring many new design versions. Consequently, each feedback will provide a new design version and maintaining these versions can be very difficult to manage especially when you are working with large projects when dealing with more than 50+ design screens. Does the platform/tool provide a design repository to maintain all versions? A key question when selecting a tool/platform should be whether it has a built in version history control panel that is quick and easy to view your evolving design files?

  1. Pricing

This is last but by no means least, how much does the tool/platform cost to use? Some providers charge licence fees, yearly subscriptions, rolling month contracts and many more. All pricing plans are different and are all based on the number of users as well as the number of add-on features that they are offering. In our opinion, we feel the best two pricing plans are your rolling month contract. In this contract you can cancel at any time and you are not signed up for a long contract. As you may not like the tool/platform or feel that this particular one is not right for you. We also believe the pricing should increase with the number of users/projects. In this way, customers are only paying for what they are using.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, evidence beats opinion. Clients don’t want endless PowerPoint’s and back-and-forth emails and not to mention never-ending meetings and specification documents. Instead they want to see evidence they want to grasp and play with the prototype ‘like a real app’ on their computer or mobile.

By embracing prototyping agencies and businesses will be working smarter not harder when they adopt to using a prototyping tool. Resulting in more time to enjoy, happier teams and clients. Everyone will start winning.

An important point to remember is that there are many prototyping tools available in the market and the importance of finding the best one that suits you, your team and clients needs. We hope you have found our evaluation criteria helpful.

We would love to discuss this further. Please leave your comments below.

Why Should Digital Agencies Integrate Prototyping?

Why Should Digital Agencies Integrate Prototyping?

Businesses and Digital Agencies are one of the most dynamic fast-paced working environments. This in itself brings about many demands and challenges where no two days are the same. On a typical day agencies work really hard to win clients going above and beyond their call of duty to build trust and long-term relationships. Validation of client’s designs is forefront. Both clients and consumers expectations have grown resulting in more pressure on agencies to go the extra mile to win new clients. Winning a web or mobile app from a potential client has become more dependent on tangible demonstrations. Clients are bored of long specification and long-winded documents. Clients instead want to understand and visualise how their end-users will interact with and use the web or mobile app they want to build step-by-step.

How to win more Clients?

But currently agencies are working too hard trying to win new clients. They are in and out of face-to-face meetings trying to earn client confidence alongside making sure projects and deliverable progress are ready on time before the next meeting. It even gets more complicated to produce documents for user interaction and user experience. The problem is that nobody wants to read these documents but would rather interact and test the web or mobile app itself. With every meeting comes new ideas/changes, which means another design version. Managing these versions becomes a chore especially if the project vision and scope was not clear from the beginning. This all becomes time consuming and confusing for all parties.

How to work smarter?

Savah-Build-designWorking hard is essential but at the same time working smarter is what really matters the most. What are the rewards for agencies to incorporate prototyping into their day-to-day work?

A Prototype allows everyone to be involved smartly from day one in rapidly exploring options and validating design in line with user interaction. An interactive click-through prototype gives us a true likeness of what the final web or mobile app will work and feel like.

Click-through prototyping gives teams more autonomy to experiment without the fear of getting it wrong. In this way, teams become more resourceful and inquisitive as well as much more comfortable with ambiguity and imperfection. Thus, ideas for web and mobile apps are shared more courageously, simulating the flow of the user experience, as with prototyping it is cheap to fail. Thus, prototypes are great for pitching and selling reducing the need for long specification documents. There are some great prototyping tools like Savah to choose from and this provides agencies and businesses with more options to explore a ways to work smarter to get more things done.

Why is a Design Collaboration Tool Essential to your Design Flow?

Why is a Design Collaboration Tool Essential to your Design Flow?

Prototyping with Savah

We understand the need of a design collaboration tool to engage, brainstorm, document decisions, to resolve conflict and to track progress. Your user interface of your web or mobile app is the most important element of your product to get right. Thus, the need to dispose of design assumptions and ambiguity is forefront. A click-through high-fidelity prototype takes the guesswork out and replaces it with a fully functional prototype that you can test ‘how your app will work and feel like’.

All of us have awesome ideas on what a product should look and feel like but in reality those ideas / thoughts have turned out to be, not so good when we have them in front of us. But all too often we spend a lot of money and time before we realise these issues and by this time, the product has been built and then we need to spend more money and time fixing these issues. But the big but is if we were testing these design ideas on an interactive prototype from day one these issues could be picked up straight away and valuable feedback given.

Keeping all Design Collaboration on the Design Screen

Too often, designers are getting puzzled with design feedback, comments and changes coming from their team and clients from multiple channels. Designers, clients and users can create, review and refine their design prototypes in mere minutes. Rather than iterating the product via email, talking on the phone or through face-to-face meetings by creating a prototype on Savah App users can iterate the design right on the design screen saving them much needed time. In this way, clients the design team can visually see and get a sense of how the product would work in real life. Making it much easier for all parties involved to tweak and refine the design screens.

Long Emails and Specification Documents?

Prototypes can be easily passed on to all team members, potential end-users and to the clients stakeholders instead of sending a large specification document outlining all the planned stages in its place they can focus and experience first hand the user journey. In this way, they can change early on before lots of time and money has been spent. With Savah you can understand how your user interacts and uses the web or mobile app. It is much simpler to illustrate to your team a web or mobile app that is interactive and functions like a real app rather than trying to communicate it to them via e-mail, Skype or even over face-to-face meetings.

Experience like a Real App

Experience the user journey from beginning to end rather than basing the user journey on individual design screens. In this way, the functionality of click-through prototyping permits the design team to capture and acquire a better understanding of the end version of the full app right from day one without any coding taking place. It breathes life into your designs.

A click-through prototype helps designers and teams link several screens together using hotspots and templates. These are screen areas that once interacted with a tap or click forwards the user to the target screen. Any one screen on a web or mobile app may have multiple hotspots to other screens. Templates undoubtedly help the team to speed up the process of creating hotspots as once set up they are automatically added and can be reused on some or all of the other screens depending upon the user specification. Creating hotspots and templates is a breeze. Thus, this allows the team to easily put together complex flows without having to focus on interactivity. Thanks to the many design collaboration tools already in the market bringing your web or mobile app to life could not be simpler. The design team and client stakeholders also can compare their design screens side-by-side, in this way, it provides them with a much-detailed view but also helps to validate and finalise the web or mobile app designs much sooner with ease and with step-by-step design history.

SavahApp provides a design collaboration tool for designers to communicate in real-time, keeping everything simple and clutter-free. So go ahead and let your design creativity flourish. Sign up today Free Forever.

Build Better and Real Interactive Prototypes

Build Better and Real Interactive Prototypes

Build Click-Through Prototypes

All over the world the importance of click-through prototypes for building better and real interactive prototypes are growing and becoming more and more popular amongst UI and UX designers. Click through prototypes allow everyone to think through complicated flows without getting bugged down in layers of code. This is why this trend is popular for designers, entrepreneurs, startups and even for brands for improving their web and mobile apps. Thus, interactive prototyping and design collaboration tools like Savah App are nowadays all the hype and this trend is here to stay.

Edit Directly on Design Screens

Before a designer passes on his/her work it makes sense to do some interactive prototypes and editing directly on the design screens before any coding begins. In this way, all key players are involved in the communication loop to create, review and refine. These tools make their lives much easier saves them much needed time, simplifies their communication and increases their productivity. This is why; this trend is here to stay. Whether the design team is designing a website, web app or a mobile app they need to find a win/win solution for themselves and their client.

Track Feedback

Thus, design is about making choices and finding the best possible solution. Like this, interactive prototyping and communication tools inform the design thinking process and help designers communicate and track feedback with the client right from day one to meet their requirements select the best solution for them and more importantly their end users. Thus, direct communication on the design screen through interactive prototype allows the design team / clients to play with different designs version and uncover possible issues without spending much time in coding and design.

As too often these issues get realised when it is too late, products have been built and money, time has been wasted resulting in unhappy clients, designers and team. But testing these designs on an interactive prototype to get feedback from your team and clients these issues would be easy and simple to identify at an early stage. Making it even more important for designers and digital agencies to find a prototyping and communication tool that works for them.

Hype or Reality? A Round up of Dublin Web Summit 2014

Hype or Reality? A Round up of Dublin Web Summit 2014

Biggest Technology Event

Reflecting upon our busy three days at the Web Summit Dublin. This conference is Europe’s biggest technology event and one of the biggest in the world it attracts the world’s best and inspiring entrepreneurs. Tuesday morning we had lift off the ringing of the opening bell of the New York’s Nasdaq Stock Exchange. This year the Web Summit went from strength to strength with 22,000 attendees, 1,500 volunteers, 108 staff and contractors from all over the world. Each day, we started with a strong cup of coffee and then we were ready to be inspired and to talk to as many people as possible. This year, the conference was spread over two huge sites the RDS and Simmonscourt. For me the conference brought together great minds, start-ups, investors, entrepreneurs and provided ample networking opportunities all under one roof. The Summit was divided over 10 summits (these being the Builders, Enterprise, Machine, Marketing, Investors, Surf, Sport, Music, Fringe, and the Night).

Networking with Startups

Over the three days, we met many cool and inspiring start-ups from all over the world. All these start-ups were arranged in the following three categories Alpha, Beta and Start. This made it easy to understand the level of trading they were operating under. It was great to learn about all the different products and services that were available in the market, which would not have been as easy without the Web Summit. During the time, we spent walking around talking to the entrepreneurs exchanging business cards and scheduling many follow up meetings. For us, generally our goal was to network and build relationships with as many people as possible as every second counts. We had a lot of ground to cover over the three days.

Entrepreneurial Success Stories

Inspirational presentations from leading serial entrepreneurs like Peter Thiel and Mark Pincus in the tech industry was one of the highlights of this year’s Web Summit. These speakers provided food for thought and thought provoking questions to keep your entrepreneurial energy thriving. The Summit came to an end on Thursday evening with an exploding finale, on the main stage the final panel included Bono (founder of U2), Dana Brunetti, Eric Wahlforss, David Carr and Bill McGlashan. The main stage was full to capacity we were lucky to get a seat in the main arena. Not forgetting, the food summit that was delicious and it was a privilege to sample Ireland’s finest foods.

savahapp-websummit

Making new friends, catching up with old and putting a face to a logo was great and also priceless because we don’t take time out of our busy lives to be able to do this. So the Web Summit provided us with a base where we could take stock and understand what the rest of the tech world was up to, plus have fun and enjoy ourselves.

On a final note, it was definitely the place to be, to promote your business, meet inspiring entrepreneurs, listen and learn from experts in the field and plunge into the tech world. Record crowds ascended on Dublin over the three days. The atmosphere was electric it was great to have so many entrepreneurial people all in one place. We met a lot of social savvy entrepreneurs and learnt a lot. For us the Web Summit is all about networking, collaborating and building lifelong relationships. The Web Summit is unquestionably where the tech world met last week. Thank you guys for organising such a great event. We hope to see you next year at the Dublin Web Summit 2015. Congratulations and well done to all who were involved.

Why Savah App Launched – The Inside Story

Why Savah App Launched – The Inside Story

savahappTearing-up

We are very excited and pleased to have launched SavahApp a couple of weeks ago.

In 2011,  we started working on a collaboration platform for students, academics and alumni’. Our team was based all over the world from London, New York, Dubai and Lahore. It was here, we experience first hand a major design communication problem. We spent hours, days, weeks trying to finalise our initial design. I was sending countless emails back-and-forth with design feedback to our designers and at the same time, numerous back and forth emails, Skype calls and of course face to face meetings with my team but the whole process was confusing and not at all productive. We wasted so much time and money. We all felt there must be a quick and simple way to communicate design communication to your team that was robust and simple. In 2011 we looked at the market to see if there was any tools that we could use to simply receive and send feedback back and forth to our team. There were many prototyping tools available but they were missing design communication and it was the design communication facility that we needed.

We were so frustrated so decided to build our own in-house little tool to solve this specific problem that we were having. Our tool was very basic and allowed us to upload our design images and all of us then could add comments, suggestions onto the image. This made our life so much easier. This has worked really well for us and later on some of our friends have also started using it as well.

It was in 2013 that we took note of the advancement made in the industry as well as the growing need to improve the user-experience and that making the perfect design is the key for any product. It was at the same time that I was working with many design agencies and it was the same design communication problems that i was experiencing time after time. December 2013, we started to explore the market. We knew, experienced and witnessed the need for a design communication platform in the market that would bring the wow factor to designers, creative teams and design agencies to help them save time and deliver awesome products to their clients.

To date, we are doing well and have received excellent response from the companies that we have spoken with and in the near future we are releasing some more amazing features for our customer to help them solve their design communication problems and enable them to work more productive and smarter. As we believe this is just the beginning!
